birthday twins, back-to-school, and big emotions

Today is a big day for me and my family. Seventeen years ago, I became a mom for the first time. Fifteen years ago, I became a mom for the second time—on the very same day. Yes, both of my kids share a birthday, and it all happened naturally.

When I look back at old photos, I can’t believe how much time has flown. We were all so young, and now my kids are taller than me (I’m officially the shortest in the house, aside from Teddy the Rescue Mutt). It’s surreal to see how grown-up they’ve become.

Yesterday was also the first day of school. I now have a high school sophomore and a senior. For you this may be NBD—but for me, being a first-time mom of a senior is emotional.

I know this year will be full of “last firsts” and “last lasts”—the first last being the last first day of high school. It’s bittersweet, exciting, and a little overwhelming all at once.

As a mom, I’m excited for all the unknowns ahead—the opportunities, the adventures, and the growth that college and life will bring my kids. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t also nostalgic and teary.

Like so many parents of teens, I find myself asking:

  • Did I do enough?

  • Have I taught them how to think critically and not just follow social media trends or influencers?

  • And maybe most importantly… when will they think I’m “cool” again?

Parenting teenagers is a constant mix of pride, being pissed off, worry and wonder.

Let me know if you have any tips or tricks that helped you navigate your kid’s year as a senior.
